Bufo regularis (Panther Toad)
A report by Lutz Liegner <Terraristikshop@t-online.de>
Keeping:
I keep 3,9 toads in a 150x60x60 cm terrarium. 1/4 of the area is used for water.
I use cocos substrate filled in approx. 10 cm high which I permanently keep slightly damp.
Some shale stones below a
50W halogen lamp make a basking place which is frequently used.
A thick branch for climbing reaches from the basking place across the water.
Bufo regularis loves to climb. I observed this behaviour in Ghana a several times and
therefore offered the toads the possibility to do so in the terrarium, too.
The terrarium does not include any further heating. I even would dissuate from that.
Breeding:
I gave the terrarium a dry period.
The substrate completely dried out and I reduced feeding and removed the water area.
The toads burried and only reappeared after I moistened the substrate again 6 weeks later.
One week later I started to increase feeding.
Then breeding started and I was very busy with removing the amounts of eggs from the water place.
The first time I had great losses as a fungus spread on the eggs.
Meanwhile I move the eggs to a big fish tank with a powerful filter and have nearly
no losses.
One time I lost many young because the little toads had not enough possibilities to leave the water
and drank. As of then I place the tadpoles in a suitable container as soon as the arms
break through.
I do not try to rear the smallest of the young anymore. It does not work.
They die inspite of all efforts, even when separated from the larger ones.
I tried it again inspite of my bad experiences and later it nearly drove me mad.
I breed Bufo regularis regulary since 4 years now.
